Camping around the Twin Cities
If you’re starting near Minneapolis-St Paul, Baker Park Reserve — a 2,700-acre natural area on Lake Independence with over 200 sites — is a good base with a beach, trails and boat rental. Lebanon Hills Campground and Town & Country RV Park are both close in with full hookups, and most local campgrounds are pet-friendly, several with dedicated dog walking areas. Some Walmarts and casinos allow overnight RV parking for a single night, though it’s worth checking with the store or casino directly rather than assuming.
When to travel
Late May through September is the main season, with July and August busiest along the North Shore. Fall brings strong colour to the forests around the Boundary Waters, typically peaking in late September and early October.

RV rental Minnesota — FAQs
Where can I pick up an RV in Minnesota?
Owners and operators list vehicles across the state, with the widest choice around Minneapolis-St Paul and Duluth. Enter your postcode and widen your search radius to see the full spread of vehicles near you.
Can I camp in an RV inside Voyageurs National Park?
Not with a drive-in RV site. Voyageurs has no drive-in RV campsites or hookups, and its lakeside sites need a boat to reach, booked on Recreation.gov. The park points visitors to campgrounds outside its boundary for traditional RV camping. Lakes usually stay frozen until mid-May and freeze again around November. Use the National Park Service's camping page to plan.
Which Minnesota state parks are on the North Shore?
Eight state parks sit along Highway 61, the North Shore Scenic Drive, between Duluth and the Canadian border: Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse, Tettegouche, George H. Crosby Manitou (a short way inland), Temperance River, Cascade River, Judge C.R. Magney and Grand Portage. The highway is about 150 miles long. Campsites and RV length limits vary by park, so check each one with the Minnesota DNR before you book.
