Pets, boondocking and booking ahead
Pets are allowed in almost all Wisconsin state park and forest campgrounds, though not in buildings, beaches, playgrounds or shelters — Devil’s Lake State Park even has a designated dog-friendly beach. For genuine boondocking, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and the hilly Western Uplands region both have dispersed camping options along rivers and lakes. Many national forest campgrounds run first-come, first-served — arriving by Thursday afternoon is the usual advice for securing a summer weekend site, otherwise book a private RV resort well ahead of peak season.
When to travel
Late May through September is the main season, with Wisconsin Dells’ waterparks and Door County’s orchards both busiest in July and August. Fall brings good colour across the state’s forests through late September and October.

Owners and operators list vehicles across the state, with the widest choice around Milwaukee and Madison. Enter your postcode and widen your search radius to see the full spread of vehicles near you.
Can I boondock in Wisconsin?
Yes — the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and the Western Uplands region both offer dispersed camping along rivers and lakes outside the developed campgrounds.
Do I need a vehicle pass to camp in Wisconsin state parks?
Yes. Wisconsin requires a vehicle admission pass on all motor vehicles entering state parks, forests and recreation areas, including when camping. At the time of writing, a daily pass for a non-resident vehicle is $16 and a 12-month pass is $50, and campers without an annual pass need one daily pass per night. Check current prices on the Wisconsin DNR admission page.
Can I camp in an RV in Door County, Wisconsin?
Yes. Peninsula State Park in Door County has more than 460 campsites and eight miles of shoreline, and it opens year round. Sites are reserved through the Wisconsin state parks system, so book early for summer weekends and autumn colour. The park does not list site lengths or hookups on its main page, so check against your RV. See the Peninsula State Park page.
