Things to see near your Las Vegas pickup

However you feel about the Strip itself, it’s worth a walk before you head out — the fountains, lights and free-to-see spectacles run around the clock. Fremont Street downtown is the older, more classic Vegas, with a canopy light show most evenings. Hoover Dam, about 37 miles southeast, is a straightforward drive with tours of the dam itself, and pairs naturally with a stop at Lake Mead. If you only have a day to spare, Hoover Dam and Valley of Fire can be combined into one round trip of around 165 miles from the Strip.

Best road trips from Las Vegas

  • Red Rock Canyon — about 20 minutes from downtown, a scenic 13-mile loop drive through sandstone formations, easy as a half-day trip.
  • Valley of Fire and Hoover Dam — about an hour each way, 1–2 days. Nevada’s oldest state park and one of the Southwest’s best-known engineering landmarks, combinable into a single loop.
  • Zion National Park — about 150 miles, 2.5–3 hours, 2–3 days. Sweeping red-rock canyons and some of the best hiking in the Southwest.
  • The Grand Canyon — about 275 miles to the South Rim, 4 hours, 2–3 days.
  • Combine Zion and the Grand Canyon — the drive between the two takes about 6 hours, making a loop of both from Las Vegas realistic over 5–7 days.

Parking and boondocking around Las Vegas

None of the Strip casinos allow free overnight RV parking, and the city itself prohibits living in a parked RV outside an official RV park — Clark County allows street parking for up to 72 hours, but that’s not the same as overnighting in the vehicle. If you want free dry camping (boondocking), it’s on public land (BLM or National Forest) outside city limits rather than in Las Vegas proper: Lovell Canyon, about 45 minutes from the Strip, has a paved main road to several dirt sites with a 14-day limit, and there’s a rough-road BLM site near Valley of Fire’s north entrance too. Both are dry camping with no hookups or amenities, so plan to arrive with full water and empty tanks.

When to travel

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for Las Vegas itself, with summer desert heat regularly over 100°F. Zion and the Grand Canyon are busiest — and their campgrounds book out furthest ahead — from May through September.

RV rental Las Vegas — FAQs

Where can I pick up an RV near Las Vegas?

Owners list vehicles across the Las Vegas Valley, including North Las Vegas and Henderson. A 20–35 mile radius in the search shows the full choice.

Can I park my RV overnight on the Strip?

No — none of the Strip casinos allow free overnight RV parking, and the city doesn’t allow living in a parked vehicle outside an official RV park. Book a campground or RV resort for overnight stays, several of which are a short drive from the Strip.

Where can I take an RV for a night away from Las Vegas?

Valley of Fire State Park is about 55 miles north-east of the city, roughly an hour's drive. Its two campgrounds have 72 units, RV sites with power and water hookups, a dump station and showers, and all sites need reservations. Lake Mead National Recreation Area has over 900 camping and RV sites at 15 locations. See Nevada State Parks.

Can I drive an RV from Las Vegas to Death Valley in summer?

It is possible, but summer is not the time. Furnace Creek is about 118 miles and 2.5 hours from Las Vegas, summer highs there regularly reach well over 110°F, and the park has only three fuel stations (Furnace Creek, Stovepipe Wells and Panamint Springs). Don't rely on satnav alone, as the National Park Service warns it can send you to closed roads. Winter and spring are far more comfortable.
