This policy explains what personal data campervanhire.com collects when you use this website, why, how long we keep it, who we share it with, and the rights you have under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).
Who we are
Campervanhire.com is run by Malcolm Maybury. We are the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. If you have any questions about it, or want to use any of your rights, email info@campervanhire.com.
Campervanhire.com is not a rental company. The campervans, motorhomes and RVs you see here are listed by their owners on Outdoorsy, our booking partner. When you search for a vehicle, make a booking, or list your own vehicle, you do that with Outdoorsy, and Outdoorsy handles your booking and payment details under its own privacy policy (see “Outdoorsy” below).
What we collect and why
When you contact us
If you use the contact form or email us, we receive your name, email address, the subject and your message. We use them only to reply to you and to deal with your enquiry. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in answering the people who get in touch. Messages are kept in our email inbox for up to 24 months, then deleted, unless we need them longer to deal with an ongoing matter.
When you visit the website
Like most websites, our hosting company records basic technical information each time a page is requested: your IP address, browser type, the page visited and the time. These server logs are used to keep the site secure and working, and are deleted on a rolling basis by our host. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in running a secure website.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how people find and use the site — for example which pages are popular — so we can improve it. Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technology. For visitors in the UK and the European Economic Area, analytics and advertising storage are set to “denied” by default, so Google Analytics does not set analytics cookies unless you have agreed to them; without consent it may still receive limited, cookieless measurement signals. Our lawful basis is your consent where cookies are used, and our legitimate interest in basic, aggregated measurement otherwise. Google’s privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy.
The vehicle search (Outdoorsy)
The search box on our location pages and our search page is provided by Outdoorsy. When it loads, your browser connects to Outdoorsy’s servers, and the search uses Google Maps to look up the place you enter. Outdoorsy and Google receive technical information such as your IP address and the searches you make. If you click through to a vehicle or a booking, you continue on Outdoorsy’s website. Links to Outdoorsy from this site include a partner reference so that Outdoorsy can recognise visitors we have sent; this may earn us a commission, at no extra cost to you. Outdoorsy’s privacy policy is at outdoorsy.com.
The Outdoorsy search also loads Outdoorsy’s own analytics and advertising tools, including Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics, Google Ads and the Meta (Facebook) Pixel. These are controlled by Outdoorsy, not by us, and may set cookies and share information about your visit with Google and Meta, for example to measure Outdoorsy’s advertising. They load only on pages that show the vehicle search. Outdoorsy is responsible for this processing under its own privacy policy, and you can block these cookies in your browser settings or with a content blocker.
Embedded videos
Some pages include videos from YouTube. When you play one, YouTube (Google) may set cookies and receive information about your visit, under Google’s privacy policy.
Cookies
When you first visit, a banner asks whether you accept analytics cookies. Google Analytics stays off unless you choose “Accept all”, and choosing “Reject all” is just as easy. Your choice is stored in your browser so we don’t ask again, and you can change it at any time with the “Cookie settings” link at the foot of every page.
This website does not use cookies for its own features. Cookies may be set by the services described above: Google Analytics (only if you accept on the cookie banner), the Outdoorsy search (including Outdoorsy’s own analytics and advertising tags, such as Google Ads and the Meta Pixel) and Google Maps, and YouTube when you play a video. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time; the site will still work, although the vehicle search may not remember your choices.
Who we share data with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with the service providers that help us run the site:
- SiteGround — website hosting and email, including contact-form messages.
- Google — Google Analytics, Google Maps (through the vehicle search) and YouTube.
- Outdoorsy — the vehicle search and bookings, and recognising visitors we send to its website. On pages with the vehicle search, Outdoorsy’s tags may also share information with Google and Meta (Facebook).
We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
International transfers
Some of these providers, including Google and Outdoorsy, are based in or process data in the United States. Where personal data is transferred outside the UK, it is protected by the UK’s data adequacy arrangements (such as the UK–US Data Bridge for certified companies) or by standard contractual clauses approved for use in the UK.
How long we keep data
- Contact messages: up to 24 months.
- Server logs: kept by our host for a short period for security, then deleted.
- Analytics data: kept in Google Analytics for no longer than our account’s retention setting, which is at most 14 months.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
- ask us to correct data that is wrong or incomplete;
- ask us to delete your data;
- ask us to restrict how we use it, or object to our using it on the basis of legitimate interests;
- ask for your data in a portable format, where that applies; and
- withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on consent.
To use any of these rights, email info@campervanhire.com. We will reply within one month. For data held by Outdoorsy or Google, you can also contact them directly.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, please tell us first so we can try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK data protection regulator: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.
Children
This website is aimed at adults planning a holiday. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
