Driving your RV in the Colorado mountains
Denver’s own elevation (5,280 feet) already costs an engine roughly 15% of its sea-level power, and that climbs to about 25% above 10,000 feet on the highest passes — plan for slower climbs and use low gears rather than riding the brakes on the steep 6-7% grades around Glenwood Canyon and the higher passes. Colorado’s Traction Law applies on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September through May, requiring winter or all-weather tires, or chains, for vehicles under 16,001 lbs GCWR/GVWR — check CDOT’s current conditions before a mountain trip outside summer.
When to travel
June to September is the main season, with Rocky Mountain National Park’s high alpine routes typically open from late May or June through October. July and August are busiest; book park campgrounds well ahead.
