What is a Class A RV?
Class As are motorized RVs, a home that you drive, as opposed to travel trailers, which you need to tow with a separate vehicle. They come in a range of sizes from 25 feet to 45 feet to accommodate more people. It covers a wide range of vehicles, from basic models to the most luxurious. But no matter the size, you will have the convenience of an onboard bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom or two. This means you can travel independently, cook your own local produce, and sleep in the same bed each night. All without having to lug around heavy baggage!
What is the difference between Class A Class C Motorhomes?
Class A’s are the kings of motorhome rentals. They are large and luxurious. Some even come with a washing machine! It is truly a home on wheels.
Class C’s are smaller and are built on a truck or van chassis, making them easier to maneuver. They have many home comforts and often come with a basic kitchen and toilet. Camper rentals usually fall into this category.
Class B’s are usually smaller then Class C. This is a bit confusing; however, they are typically made from a customized van, and so are often more expensive. Although they are small, they make up for it by being quirky and stylish. Some have found innovative ways to have a kitchen and toilet still!
How Many People Can Sleep in a Class A RV?
When choosing between RV rentals, you will need to consider how many people are traveling with you. Depending on the size, Class A RVs can sleep between two and ten people. They usually have a bedroom at the back with a large double bed or bunk bed. Most also have a living room that can be converted into a bedroom at night. More extensive models may even have a second bedroom.
Can I Drive Class A RV with a Car License?
The laws around what license you need to drive an RV vary from country to country. In the UK, if a motorhome is over 3.5 tonnes but is under 7.5 tonnes, you will need a C1, which you will automatically have if you passed your test before 1997.
In most parts of the United States, a standard license is sufficient to rent an RV under 26,000 pounds. However, you must be over 25, have had your license of over 12 months, and your license must be in the Latin alphabet, such as English or Spanish. However, requirements can change between states.
Wherever you travel, you should consider the local driving requirements and find a smaller rental if necessary.
Diesel Vs. Gas
Motorhome rentals will either come with a gas or a diesel engine. The main difference for your rental experience is that diesel RVs have more towing capacity and tend to be more stable and smooth to drive. Diesel engines are also at the back, which makes less noise, while the generator is upfront so that it is not too close to where you sleep.
The choice is yours! If you plan on driving long distances, then a diesel engine might be best. Otherwise, gas engines might save you money and are often easier to fix if something goes wrong.
