Things to see near your Miami pickup

South Beach‘s Art Deco district is free to walk — Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue and Española Way hold the world’s largest collection of Art Deco buildings, in the classic Miami pastel palette. Wynwood Walls, over 50 rotating murals in a former warehouse district, has turned the whole neighbourhood into an open-air gallery. Little Havana‘s Calle Ocho is lined with Cuban cafés and cigar shops — watch the domino players at Máximo Gómez Park and soak up the atmosphere before you set off.

Best road trips from Miami

  • Everglades National Park — about 40–70 miles depending on entrance, under an hour, an easy day trip or overnight.
  • Key Largo — about 60 miles, 1.5 hours, the gateway to the Keys.
  • Key West via the Overseas Highway — about 160 miles, 3–4 hours one way, 4–7 days for the full round trip with stops along the Keys.
  • Everglades and Biscayne combined — a full loop of both parks runs about 183 miles and pairs naturally with a Keys extension.

Parking and hurricane season

Wild camping or boondocking isn’t really an option within Miami city limits — plan on a private campground or state park site rather than a parking lot, and note that Miami-Dade County limits residential properties to one RV parked at a time, which gives a sense of how tightly this is regulated locally. Hurricane season runs June through November; some coastal counties restrict RV movement once a hurricane warning is issued, and evacuating campgrounds is common practice, with coastal highways sometimes switching to one-way inland traffic during a major storm. Have a primary and backup evacuation route in mind if you’re travelling in that window.

When to travel

December through April is the most comfortable and popular season, with lower humidity and no hurricane risk. Hurricane season runs June through November, and summer brings heavy afternoon rain and high humidity, especially in the Everglades.

RV rental Miami — FAQs

Where can I pick up an RV near Miami?

Owners list vehicles across Miami-Dade County, including Homestead and the Port of Miami area. A 20–35 mile radius in the search shows the full choice.

What happens if a hurricane is forecast during my trip?

Most owners build weather flexibility into their booking terms for named storms — ask about the cancellation and rescheduling policy before you book if you’re travelling June through November, and monitor the National Hurricane Center’s forecasts once your trip is close.

How long does it take to drive an RV from Miami to Key West?

Allow around 4 hours without stops for the roughly 160 miles. The Overseas Highway (US 1) runs 113 miles from Florida City to Key West over dozens of bridges, including the Seven Mile Bridge. Campsites are scarce: Florida state park campsites such as Bahia Honda can be reserved up to 10 months ahead for non-residents, and they sell out fast. Plan the Florida route around that.

How do tolls work for an RV around Miami?

Florida's Turnpike mainline is all-electronic, with no toll booths or cash lanes. You pay with a SunPass transponder, or Toll-By-Plate, where the plate is photographed and the registered owner is billed. Tolls depend on distance and axles, so an RV costs more than a car. Ask the owner how tolls are handled on your booking before you collect. The Florida Turnpike tolls page has a calculator.
