Best road trips from Salt Lake City
- Arches National Park — under 4 hours, 2–3 days. The largest concentration of natural stone arches in the world.
- Zion National Park — about 308 miles, 4–4.5 hours, 2–3 days.
- Bryce Canyon — about 4 hours, 2 days. Roughly 70 miles and under 2 hours from Zion via the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway, making the two an easy combination. Since 7 June 2026, RVs over 35 ft 9 in long, 7 ft 10 in wide or 11 ft 4 in high may not use that highway and must detour via Highway 20, about 150 miles.
- The full Utah loop — Arches, Bryce and Zion together run about 650 miles round trip from Salt Lake City; 8–10 days covers all three comfortably, with Capitol Reef or Canyonlands as options to extend it further.
Know before you go to Zion
From roughly the end of February to the end of November, Zion Canyon’s main road and most trailheads are only accessible by the park’s own shuttle bus — private vehicles, including RVs, aren’t allowed to drive it during shuttle season, so you’ll park at the visitor centre or your campground and ride in. Inside the park, Watchman Campground allows RV camping but not generators, while South Campground allows generators but has no electric hookups; the road to Lava Point Campground is restricted to vehicles under 19 feet. Reserve well ahead — Watchman opens reservations six months out, and South Campground up to 14 days before arrival.
When to travel
Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for Utah’s desert national parks, with summer bringing high heat, especially at Zion and Arches. Winter can bring snow to higher-elevation routes and some campgrounds close for the season.

RV rental Salt Lake City — FAQs
Where can I pick up an RV near Salt Lake City?
Owners list vehicles across the Salt Lake Valley, including Draper and Sandy. A 20–35 mile radius in the search shows the full choice.
Can I drive my RV through Zion Canyon?
Not during shuttle season, roughly late February to late November — the canyon road is shuttle-only for that stretch, and you’ll park and ride in instead. Outside those months, the road is open to private vehicles.
Can I camp in an RV on Antelope Island near Salt Lake City?
Yes. Antelope Island State Park sits in the Great Salt Lake and is about 30 to 40 minutes north of Salt Lake City via I-15 and the Antelope Island Causeway. It lists RV sites, a dump station and showers, and is open year round. The park does not publish size limits on its main page, so confirm your RV's length when you reserve through Utah State Parks.
Does Utah's Traction Law affect an RV trip in the Wasatch canyons in winter?
It can. In Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons, UDOT applies the Traction Law when the beacons outside the canyons are flashing. Two-wheel-drive vehicles need 3-peak-mountain-snowflake tyres on all wheels, or chains or snow socks on drive wheels, and all vehicles need at least 5/32 inch of tread. UDOT's page does not mention RVs separately, so ask the owner about winter tyres. Details are on the UDOT Traction Law page.
