Golden Gate Park‘s 1,017 acres are best explored by bike, with the California Academy of Sciences packing an aquarium, planetarium and rainforest under one roof. Fisherman’s Wharf has bay cruises, the sea lions at Pier 39 and boat trips out to Alcatraz. The Ferry Building Marketplace, one of the city’s oldest buildings, is worth a stop for local produce and artisan food before you head out — ferries from here also run to Angel Island and Sausalito.

• Yosemite National Park — about 170 miles, 3–5 hours depending on route, 3–5 days.
• The full Northern California loop — combining the Bay Area, Napa, Lake Tahoe and Yosemite runs about 900 miles; 10–12 days is the usual recommendation.

Overnight parking rules in San Francisco

San Francisco bans any vehicle longer than 22 feet or taller than 7 feet from parking on posted streets between midnight and 6am across most of the city — a policy expanded citywide in late 2024. This covers the great majority of rental RVs and larger motorhomes, and violations carry a ticket plus towing and daily impound charges, so it isn’t worth risking. Plan on a campground or RV park for every overnight stay in the city itself rather than assuming you can park on a residential street.

When to travel

San Francisco stays mild year-round, but the fog is thickest in summer, and Yosemite’s high-country roads are typically open only from late spring through October. Big Sur and Napa are good almost any time, with fall harvest season a highlight in wine country.

Can I park my RV overnight on a San Francisco street?

How do I pay the Golden Gate Bridge toll in a rental RV from San Francisco?

The Golden Gate Bridge toll is charged southbound only, into San Francisco. If the rental has a tolling programme, you can opt in, usually with a convenience fee, or opt out and pay yourself online, by phone or at a payment location, up to 30 days before or within 48 hours after crossing. Can I drive an RV to Muir Woods from San Francisco?

Only with care. The National Park Service says the roads to Muir Woods are very narrow and winding, the California Highway Patrol limits vehicles on Highway 1 to 35 feet, and the parking lots have no spaces for RVs or vehicles towing trailers. Is Highway 1 through Big Sur open for an RV trip from San Francisco?

Yes. Highway 1 between Carmel and Cambria reopened in January 2026 after landslide repairs, then sections closed again from August while the Timber and Plaskett fires burned along the coast. It fully reopened on 14 September 2026.
