Wyoming rewards a slow RV trip: two national parks, a mountain range with a big-sky drive across it, and Devils Tower on the far side of the state. Allow 7 to 10 days to take in more than one corner. The main season runs from late May to early October, when the park roads are open, with June and September the quieter months.

Wyoming road-trip routes
Route 1: Grand Teton and the Yellowstone Grand Loop (5 to 7 days)
Start with a day or two in Grand Teton, then drive north on US-89/191 through the park to Yellowstone's South Entrance. Yellowstone's Grand Loop is a figure of eight of about 142 miles, and most visitors spend 2 to 4 days on it, with plenty of short drives between geyser basins, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and Hayden Valley. The traffic builds up in July and August at wildlife sightings, so start early and treat 30 miles as a morning's drive.
Size limits matter here. Yellowstone publishes maximum lengths for each campground, from 25 ft at Lewis Lake to 60 ft at Bridge Bay and Madison and 95 ft at Fishing Bridge RV Park, and the roads over the passes are narrow and winding. Check the park's road page before you set off. The Gardner River High Bridge near Mammoth also has restrictions for very large vehicles during 2026 construction, though these apply only to oversized or overweight vehicles (for example 75 ft or more long), well beyond a typical rental RV.
Route 2: Cody, the Bighorns and Devils Tower (3 to 4 days)
Leave Yellowstone by the East Entrance, which opened on 1 May in 2026, and drop to Cody, about 50 miles from the gate. From Cody, head to Greybull and climb the Bighorn Scenic Byway on US-14, a 47-mile route that zigzags up Shell Canyon past Shell Falls to the crest near Granite Pass. Take it slowly in a larger RV, use low gear on the descents and avoid it in bad weather. The gentler alternative is US-16 from Buffalo to Ten Sleep.
From Sheridan, I-90 takes you east to Devils Tower, about 3 hours' drive, using US-14 and WY-24 from Moorcroft. Allow a night near the tower, and arrive early in the day if you want a space at the monument campground. Splitting the run into two long days with a night in Sheridan, which has several RV parks, keeps the mountain driving unhurried.
Route 3: Beartooth Highway (a side trip)
From Yellowstone's northeast corner, US-212 climbs over the Beartooth Highway into Montana. On the 2026 schedule it is open from 22 May to 12 October, and snow can close it at any time. It suits smaller rigs and clear weather.
Parks and campgrounds in Wyoming
- Grand Teton National Park has seven main campgrounds, including Colter Bay RV Park with full-hookup pull-through sites. All are reservation-only through Recreation.gov, up to six months ahead, and you cannot overnight in pullouts or at trailheads.
- Yellowstone National Park has 11 campgrounds; Pebble Creek remains closed after the 2022 floods, and the other 10 take RVs. Indian Creek, Lewis Lake, Mammoth, Slough Creek and Tower Fall book on Recreation.gov; Bridge Bay, Canyon, Fishing Bridge RV Park, Grant Village and Madison book through Yellowstone National Park Lodges. Fishing Bridge is the only one with full hookups, for hard-sided RVs only.
- Devils Tower National Monument has the Belle Fourche River Campground, first come, first served, with no hookups.
- Wyoming state parks such as Curt Gowdy, Buffalo Bill (near Cody), Boysen and Glendo take reservations at reserve.wyoming.gov in summer, roughly May to September depending on the park; out of season the sites are first come, first served.
Book as early as you can: summer weekends fill the national park sites months ahead, and private parks near the gates are the fallback. For more options, see our guide to RV parks and campgrounds.
Driving in Wyoming: wildlife, wind and weather
Keep at least 100 yards from bears and wolves and 25 yards from other wildlife, and carry bear spray on any walk. Wind is the other hazard for tall vehicles. Wyoming Department of Transportation posts blow-over risk warnings and closures to light, high-profile vehicles, and I-80 between Laramie and Rawlins, around Arlington and Elk Mountain, is often affected, so use WYDOT road reports before long transfers. Snow can fall in any month at altitude, and park roads close for the winter. Most roads in Yellowstone close by 31 October, and Dunraven Pass and the Beartooth Highway close on 12 October on the 2026 schedule. Only the northern road from Gardiner to Cooke City stays open to ordinary vehicles through the winter.
Picking up your RV
Most rental RVs in the state are listed around Jackson Hole, so that is the practical start for every route above. The Jackson Hole page covers collection and local options, and the USA hub lists other states. For rentals in general, see the USA RV rental guide, the cost guide, Class C RVs and Class B campervans. Wyoming RV trip FAQs
How long do I need for Yellowstone and Grand Teton in an RV?
Allow 5 to 7 days for both parks. Two days in Grand Teton and three or four in Yellowstone gives time for the main sights without rushing the drives between them.
When are the Wyoming park roads open?
Yellowstone's roads open in stages from mid-April, and Dunraven Pass and the Beartooth Highway opened on 22 May in 2026. Most roads close by 31 October. Check the park's road page before you travel, because snow can change dates.
Do I need to book campsites in advance?
Yes, for Grand Teton and most Yellowstone sites in summer. Grand Teton sites book up to six months ahead on Recreation.gov. Devils Tower is first come, first served, so arrive early in the day.
Is a large motorhome a good idea in Wyoming?
A Class B or Class C RV is easier. It fits campground limits and tight pullouts better, and it copes better with wind. A very long rig is fine on the main highways but harder in the parks.
