RV, Motorhome and Camper Van Rental in Pittsburgh

The choice runs from compact camper vans that handle Pittsburgh’s steep, tunnel-and-bridge street network easily to full-size Class A motorhomes with a kitchen, bathroom and slide-outs. A camper van is the easier choice for anything downtown or on the South Side’s older streets; a larger motorhome is fine once you’re on I-79, I-76 (the PA Turnpike) or I-70 heading out toward the Laurel Highlands. Pittsburgh is genuinely one of the hillier US cities, with narrow, steep residential streets in neighborhoods like Mount Washington best avoided in a large rig.

Rental cost depends mainly on vehicle class, season and rental length — a camper van is consistently the cheaper option, a Class A or large travel trailer the most expensive, and per-night rates usually drop the longer you book. Summer weekends push demand and prices up across the region; enter your dates above for a live quote rather than a generic average.

Things to see near your Pittsburgh pickup

Point State Park, at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers, is downtown Pittsburgh’s green centerpiece, with its landmark fountain, the Fort Pitt Museum, riverfront trails and views of the city’s famous bridges. The Duquesne Incline, a restored 1870s cable car, climbs Mount Washington for one of the best skyline views in the country — a short trip that’s easy to fit around a downtown visit. The Strip District nearby is worth a wander for food and markets, and Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History sit a short drive from most pickup points in Oakland.

Best road trips from Pittsburgh

  • Ohiopyle State Park — about 60 miles southeast, roughly 90 minutes. Nearly 19,000 acres of forest, whitewater rafting on the Youghiogheny River and access to the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail.
  • Fallingwater — a few miles from Ohiopyle, same trip. Frank Lloyd Wright’s most famous house, built over a waterfall; timed tickets recommended in advance.
  • The Laurel Highlands Scenic Byway — a 68-mile route through the same region, a little over 2 hours to drive without stopping. Covered bridges and mountain scenery threading between Ohiopyle and Ligonier.
  • Erie and Presque Isle State Park — about 125 miles north, roughly 2 hours. A Lake Erie sand-spit peninsula with beaches, a change of pace from the Appalachian scenery south of the city.
  • Wheeling, West Virginia — about 60 miles southwest, roughly an hour. An easy, underrated add-on with a historic downtown on the Ohio River.

Driving around Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh’s terrain is genuinely hilly and its street grid is broken up by rivers, bridges and a number of tunnels (the Fort Pitt and Squirrel Hill tunnels among the busiest) — all manageable for a rental RV on the interstate system, but older neighborhood streets can be steep, narrow and poorly suited to a large motorhome. Locals also drive with their own etiquette quirks, notably the “Pittsburgh left” (the car turning left at a light going first once it changes) — expect it rather than being caught out by it. The Laurel Highlands and Ohiopyle sit at higher elevation than the city itself, so late-season trips there can see an early frost before Pittsburgh does.

When to travel

Late spring through October is peak season, with summer the busiest stretch for Ohiopyle’s rafting season and the Laurel Highlands generally. Fall foliage across the Laurel Highlands and Allegheny National Forest, usually peaking mid-to-late October, is one of the best reasons to visit outside summer. Winter camping is limited; most area campgrounds close from November through March.

Where can I camp in an RV near Pittsburgh?

Ohiopyle State Park, in the Laurel Highlands, has Kentuck Campground with RV sites and electric hookups. Large RVs should avoid steep SR 2019 and take PA 40 to SR 2010 (Chalk Hill-Ohiopyle Road) instead. Reservations are online or on 888-PA-PARKS. See the park page and the Pennsylvania guide.

Fallingwater is about 72 miles south-east of Pittsburgh in the Laurel Highlands, roughly 1.5 hours away and close to Ohiopyle, so the two work well as one trip. Tours run from mid-March to the end of December, closed on Wednesdays and with limited dates in December, and advance tickets are required because tours are timed and small.
