Altitude and boondocking around the Springs
Colorado Springs itself sits around 6,200 feet, and nearby Pike National Forest campgrounds climb well above 8,000 feet — expect stronger sun, faster dehydration and shorter breath on the first day or two at altitude, especially if you’re coming from sea level. Pike National Forest allows dispersed camping almost anywhere outside its designated campgrounds, with no services or facilities, and it’s genuine black bear and mountain lion country, so food should stay inside the vehicle and pets on a leash. Lone Duck Campground, at the base of Pikes Peak around 7,600 feet, is a good closer-in option if you want mountain scenery without going fully off-grid.
When to travel
Summer is the main season for Pikes Peak and the higher routes, with June through September the most reliable window for full road access. Great Sand Dunes is comfortable spring through fall; midday summer sand temperatures can be extreme.

RV rental Colorado Springs — FAQs
Where can I pick up an RV near Colorado Springs?
Owners list vehicles across the Colorado Springs area, including Fountain and Monument. A 20–35 mile radius in the search shows the full choice.
Can I boondock near Colorado Springs?
Yes — Pike National Forest allows dispersed camping outside its designated campgrounds, with no services provided. It’s bear and mountain lion habitat, so keep food inside the vehicle.
Can I drive an RV up Pikes Peak?
Only a small one. On the Pikes Peak Highway, an RV's wheelbase must not exceed 19 feet and its overall length must not exceed 24 feet, and pull-behind trailers and campers are not allowed. From May to September you also need a timed entry permit. The front gate is about 30 minutes from downtown Colorado Springs, and the road runs year-round, weather permitting. A camper van is more likely to fit than a larger motorhome. See Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain.
Is there a campground inside Colorado Springs for RVs?
Cheyenne Mountain State Park, just south of the city, has 61 campsites and is booked through Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Check hookup and length details when you reserve, as these vary by site. The park is reached from I-25 exit 135 (South Academy) and Highway 115. See the CPW park page.
How far is Great Sand Dunes from Colorado Springs?
Great Sand Dunes is about 167 miles from Colorado Springs, via I-25, Walsenburg, US 160 and Highway 150. Piñon Flats is the only developed campground and is reservation-only on Recreation.gov, from 1 April to 31 October. Sites vary in length and have no hookups, so match your RV’s length to the individual site. See the NPS directions page.
