Sprinter camper van rental gets you a campervan built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, a large panel van that sits between a compact campervan and a full motorhome. The result is more headroom, storage and often a fitted washroom, without the bulk of a coachbuilt. In the US, expect around $250 a night on average for a Class B; in the UK, Sprinter-based campers are typically about £50 to £230 a night, depending on season and berths.
| Base vehicle | Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van (mostly diesel), sold in the US and the UK |
|---|---|
| Typical length | UK panel van body 5.9 m to 7.4 m; US factory Class Bs around 19 ft to 24 ft |
| Sleeps | Usually 2; 4 with a pop-top or dinette conversion |
| Licence | UK: category B up to 3,500 kg, C1 above. US: standard licence in most states |
| Typical price per night | US about $250 (Class B average); UK about £50 to £180 (2-berth) or £55 to £230 (4-berth) |
| Best for | Couples and small families who want standing room and a bathroom in a van-sized vehicle |
What makes a Sprinter camper different
Most vans in this class are Sprinter panel vans that a manufacturer or specialist converter turns into a camper. Mercedes-Benz offers the van in several wheelbases and roof heights. The UK range lists three wheelbases, standard, high and super-high roofs, and body lengths from 5,932 mm to 7,367 mm. In the US the 2026 cargo van comes with a 144-inch wheelbase in standard roof, and 144, 170 and 170 extended wheelbases in high roof.
That choice of roof and length explains the variety. A shorter standard-roof van parks more easily. A long high-roof van gives space for a fixed bed, a wet room and a full-size kitchen unit. If you are comparing many types, start with our overview of small RVs and then narrow down to Sprinters.
Factory Class B models in the US
Several US manufacturers build complete Sprinter-based coaches. Their current ranges, as shown on their own sites, include:
- Winnebago Revel: offered for the 2026 model year in the 44E and 44EC floorplans, about 19 ft 7 in to 19 ft 9 in long, sleeping two, on an all-wheel-drive Sprinter chassis with a turbo-diesel engine.
- Airstream Interstate: built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The range runs from the 19-foot Interstate 19X, which sleeps two, to 24-foot models such as the 24GT and 24GTX.
- Airstream Atlas: a 25 ft Class B+ on a rear-wheel-drive Sprinter 4500 base, offered as the Atlas 25MS and 25RT.
Plenty of private owners also rent older or custom-converted vans, which can be much cheaper than a late-model factory coach. Our Class B rental guide explains how factory and custom builds differ.
Sprinter campervan hire in the UK: conversions and coachbuilts
In the UK, Sprinter-based hire vans include both conversions and factory-built motorhomes. Hymer's ML-T, for example, is a semi-integrated motorhome on a Sprinter chassis, listed at 3,500 kg as standard with an optional 4,100 kg chassis and optional all-wheel drive. Converters vary widely: some fit a rear bed, a compact kitchen and a wet room; others fit a rear lounge, a pop-up roof and a basic galley. Sprinter-based listings appear on Outdoorsy in the UK, typically as 2 to 4 berth vans.
Since there is no fixed spec, ask these questions of the listing:
- What is the maximum authorised mass? (See licence below.)
- Is there a fixed bed, or does the lounge convert each night?
- Is there a fitted toilet and shower, or only a portable toilet?
- Is it a high roof, a pop-top or neither?
- What is the overall height and length?
For smaller vans, see our campervan hire guide; for UK travel basics, the UK campervan hire guide is the place to start.
2WD, all-wheel drive and 4x4
Many Sprinter campers are two-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is available on the US range. Mercedes-Benz lists AWD on selected 2500, 3500XD and 4500 versions, and the Winnebago Revel uses an AWD Sprinter chassis.
What AWD gives you is better grip on gravel, wet grass and snowy roads. It does not mean you can go anywhere. Many rental owners forbid unpaved or off-road driving, and insurance terms may exclude it. Read the owner's rules in the listing and do not assume that a 4x4 badge covers off-road use. For most holidays, a 2WD van with good tyres is perfectly adequate.
Height, parking and roof clearance
A high-roof Sprinter is tall. That is the trade-off for standing room. Before you book, find the overall height on the listing and check it against the places you will drive:
- Car parks with height barriers, often a problem in town centres and at ferry terminals.
- Low bridges, tunnels and overhanging trees on rural roads.
- Drive-through lanes and fuel canopies.
Park roads can also restrict size. Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park prohibits vehicles longer than 21 ft or wider than 8 ft between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun, and warns that vehicles over 10 ft tall can struggle on the western side from Logan Pass, according to the National Park Service. A 19 ft Revel is within the length limit (check width with mirrors and height too); a 24 ft Airstream Interstate model is not.
Diesel, AdBlue and DEF
Most Sprinter campers are diesel, and recent diesel Sprinters use a separate exhaust fluid tank to cut emissions. It is called AdBlue in the UK and Europe and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) in the US. The tank is separate from the fuel tank and has its own filler cap and warning light. Ask the owner how often it needs topping up.
Put the right fluid in the right filler. Diesel in the exhaust fluid tank, or the reverse, can lead to a costly repair. If you are unsure, ask the owner at handover, and note it in the listing messages.
Licence rules for Sprinter campers
United Kingdom
A category B car licence covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass (MAM). Category C1 covers 3,500 kg to 7,500 kg, according to gov.uk. Plenty of Sprinter conversions are built to stay at 3,500 kg, but the UK Sprinter range goes up to 5.0 tonnes gross vehicle weight, and the Hymer ML-T has a 4,100 kg option, so never assume. Ask for the MAM. If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997, your licence usually shows C1 as well, but to keep C1 when you renew at 70 or over you need a D4 medical report and must meet the higher lorry and bus medical standards. Check the plate or the listing, and see our guide on licence rules for campervans.
United States
Most states do not need a special licence for a typical RV rental. Mercedes-Benz lists the Sprinter cargo van at 9,050 lb up to 12,125 lb gross vehicle weight rating, far below the 26,000 lb at which some states add rules. Requirements vary by state, so check where you collect.
Sprinter camper van rental costs
United States
The Class B average is around $250 a night. Older and custom vans often list from about $100, while late-model factory coaches run higher: some newer Winnebago Revel listings are $500 a night or more. Weekly and monthly discounts are set by each owner. Our RV rental cost guide lists the other charges to expect.
United Kingdom
| Season | 2-berth, per night | 4-berth, per night |
|---|---|---|
| Low | £50 to £90 | £55 to £110 |
| Shoulder | £70 to £125 | £85 to £160 |
| Peak | £90 to £180 | £110 to £230 |
Insurance excess is typically £500 to £2,500, and the security deposit about £500 to £1,500. Check what your owner requires. For a US premium option, see our guide to high-end US motorhomes.
Is a Sprinter camper right for you?
Strengths
- Standing room and real storage in a vehicle that drives like a large van
- Often a fitted bed, kitchen and wet room
- Suits both city and rural driving better than a large motorhome
- All-wheel drive available on some US models
Drawbacks
- Tall and long enough to need care with barriers and parking
- Premium US models cost more than the average Class B
- Tanks and bathrooms are smaller than in a motorhome
- Heavier UK versions may need a C1 licence
How hire works
- Search and filter by location and dates.
- Check the listing: height, length, MAM or weight, mileage, insurance excess, delivery and what is included.
- Book through our partner Outdoorsy. Insurance and payment protection come with every booking. 24/7 roadside assistance is an optional extra.
- Collect the van or have it delivered, where the owner offers it. Mileage, delivery and cancellation terms are set by each owner, as Outdoorsy's help centre explains.
Sprinter camper van FAQs
How much does it cost to rent a Sprinter camper van?
In the US a Class B averages about $250 a night, with premium models higher. In the UK, a 2-berth is about £50 to £180 a night depending on season, and a 4-berth about £55 to £230.
Can I drive a Sprinter camper on a car licence in the UK?
Yes, if its MAM is 3,500 kg or less. Heavier versions need category C1, though drivers who passed before 1 January 1997 usually have it (from age 70, keeping C1 needs a medical).
What is the difference between a Sprinter camper and a Class B RV?
Most Class B RVs are built on a van chassis, and the Sprinter is one common base. Sprinter is a vehicle, Class B is a type of RV.
Do Sprinter campers have toilets and showers?
Many do, but not all. Check the listing for a fitted wet room or a portable toilet.
Are Sprinter campers good in winter?
A high-roof conversion is usually better insulated than a pop-top, but check for a diesel heater and tank heating if you plan to travel in cold weather.
