Queenstown is the South Island’s southern pickup point — straight into Fiordland, the Southern Alps and Central Otago’s wine country, with Milford Sound as the single most-booked day trip from any New Zealand base. It also works well as one end of a one-way hire up to Christchurch via Aoraki/Mt Cook.
This page covers a Queenstown-based trip specifically. For cost, licence rules and the self-contained rules for freedom camping, see the Campervan Hire New Zealand guide — everything there applies here too.

Owners list a mix of compact 2-berth campervans, mid-size camper vans and larger motorhomes with their own toilet and shower, and you book whichever vehicle suits your trip through our partner Outdoorsy.
What’s around Queenstown
Milford Sound, in Fiordland National Park, is about four hours each way through Te Anau and the Eglinton Valley — one of the world’s great drives before you even reach the sound itself. In a campervan you can take it slowly, stay overnight near Te Anau, and reach Milford early, ahead of the day-trip coaches from Queenstown.
Central Otago, on Queenstown’s doorstep, is wine country — Gibbston Valley and the Cromwell basin both within half an hour, with cellar doors set against the same mountain scenery as the town itself.
Wānaka, about an hour north over the Crown Range, is Queenstown’s quieter neighbour — Lake Wānaka, the Rob Roy Glacier track, and the start of the road toward Aoraki/Mt Cook and the classic South Island loop.
Arrowtown, 20 minutes from Queenstown, is a preserved gold-rush town — an easy half-day stop with real history rather than a recreated one.
Where to stay overnight around Queenstown
- Near Queenstown — Queenstown Top 10 Holiday Park sits about 20 minutes out; Queenstown Lakeview Holiday Park is closer in, both with powered sites.
- Arrowtown — Hampshire Holiday Park Arrowtown is about 15 minutes from Queenstown, a quieter base than staying in town.
- Closer to the lake — Twelve Mile Delta Campsite, about 30 minutes from Queenstown on Lake Wakatipu, is a Department of Conservation site for a more basic overnight stop.
Book well ahead for the Queenstown Winter Festival (June) and the summer peak — the town’s holiday parks are some of the tightest to book in the country.
Best time to visit
October to April — the same window as the rest of the South Island, per the main New Zealand guide. The Crown Range and other alpine roads around Queenstown can get snow and ice from May to October, so winter driving needs chains and extra care. Queenstown also runs as a ski town in winter if that’s the trip.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to hire a campervan in Queenstown?
The same nightly ranges apply as the rest of New Zealand — see the Campervan Hire New Zealand cost breakdown.
How far is Milford Sound from Queenstown?
About four hours each way by road, through Te Anau and the Eglinton Valley. Staying overnight near Te Anau rather than driving there and back in a day gets you to Milford earlier, before the tour coaches from Queenstown arrive.
Is Queenstown a good start for a one-way hire?
Yes — Queenstown to Christchurch via Aoraki/Mt Cook is one of the most common one-way routes on the South Island, and works in either direction. See the one-way hire section on the main New Zealand guide for how the relocation fee works.
Do I need a 4WD for the roads around Queenstown?
No — the main routes to Milford Sound, Wānaka and Central Otago are sealed. The Crown Range road between Queenstown and Wānaka is sealed but steep and narrow with switchbacks, so take it slowly regardless of vehicle.
How many days do I need in Queenstown?
Three to five days covers Milford Sound, Wānaka and Central Otago without rushing. It also works as the start or end of the longer South Island loop described on the main New Zealand guide.
Is a campervan the same as a motorhome or RV?
Yes — this site uses the terms interchangeably. A campervan is usually the smaller van-based vehicle, a motorhome the larger coach-built type with a separate cab, and RV (recreational vehicle) is the term used in American brochures. Searching for motorhome hire or RV rental in Queenstown will find the same listings as campervan hire.
