Things to see near your Windsor pickup

The Windsor Riverfront is a 5 km paved trail along the Detroit River with some of the best skyline views of Detroit anywhere in the city, free to walk or cycle. Along it: Dieppe Gardens and its Peace Beacon monument, Coventry Gardens with its floating fountain (illuminated at night), and the Windsor Sculpture Park, an open-air gallery running half a kilometre along the water. Caesars Windsor, right on the riverfront, adds a casino and entertainment option if that’s part of the trip.

Best road trips from Windsor

  • Point Pelee National Park — about 50 km, Canada’s southernmost point and a major songbird migration stop each spring.
  • Pinery Provincial Park — about 180 km, Lake Huron beaches and one of the largest oak savannah ecosystems left in Canada.
  • Toronto — about 370 km for a longer trip east, roughly 4 hours via Highway 401.

Driving around Windsor

Windsor’s border crossings (the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel) connect directly to Detroit, but the tunnel doesn’t accommodate RVs or trailers — anyone crossing into the US with a larger rig needs the Ambassador Bridge or the Blue Water Bridge further north, and should have passports and any required documentation ready regardless of route. Locally, Highway 401 is the main route east toward London and Toronto and can see heavy holiday-weekend traffic.

When to travel

Late May through early October is the most comfortable window, with midweek stays easier to book than weekends. Point Pelee’s spring migration (typically May) draws birdwatchers from across the continent and is worth planning around if that’s of interest.
