Things to see near your Thunder Bay pickup

Fort William Historical Park, the continent’s largest reconstructed fur trading post, spans 42 buildings across 20 acres with costumed historical interpreters bringing the 1800s fur trade to life. For a wider view of the region, boat tours from the harbour take in the Sleeping Giant formation — a peninsula stretching across Lake Superior that genuinely resembles a giant lying on its back — along with the Thunder Bay Main Lighthouse and surrounding islands.

Best road trips from Thunder Bay

  • Kakabeka Falls — about 30 minutes, nicknamed the “Niagara of the North.”
  • Ouimet Canyon — about 1 hour, a 150 m wide gorge with 100 m cliffs viewed from platforms.
  • Quetico Provincial Park — about 2 hours, wilderness canoe country with far fewer visitors than Ontario’s more southern parks.

Driving around Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay is genuinely remote from the rest of southern Ontario — the drive to Sudbury or Toronto is a multi-day undertaking along Highway 17, with long stretches between towns and services. Fuel up whenever you pass a station on the longer routes. Winters are long and severe this far north on Lake Superior, so the practical RV season runs roughly May through September, and moose are a real hazard on the highways, especially at dawn and dusk.

When to travel

June through September is the main season, with temperatures ranging from 15–27°C. July and August are busiest and warmest; September brings good colour with quieter roads before facilities scale back for winter.
