Science North, one of Canada’s leading science centres, is built into the Canadian Shield bedrock and spans four levels plus an IMAX theatre and dome planetarium. Best road trips from Sudbury

  • Killarney Provincial Park — about 110 km, quartzite ridges (the La Cloche Mountains) and some of the clearest lakes in Ontario.
  • Manitoulin Island — about 185 km, the world’s largest freshwater island, reached by highway or the Chi-Cheemaun ferry from the Bruce Peninsula side.

Driving around Sudbury

Northern Ontario distances are genuinely bigger than they look on a map, and services thin out noticeably once you’re off Highway 17 or 69 — plan fuel stops rather than assuming the next town has a station. Winters are long and severe this far north, so the practical RV season runs roughly May through September. Moose are a genuine road hazard on northern highways, most active at dawn and dusk.

When to travel

June to September is the main season; booking early spring or late fall often means better rates. July and August are busiest for Killarney and Manitoulin Island; September brings good fall colour with noticeably quieter roads.

Can I camp in an RV at Killarney Provincial Park near Sudbury?

Yes, but with limits. Killarney is about 125 km from Sudbury by road, via Highway 69 and Highway 637, so allow around 1.5 to 2 hours. George Lake campground has 9 RV pull-through sites and a trailer dump, but no electrical sites. Check your RV's length with the owner, and reserve ahead through Ontario Parks.

Where can I find electrical RV sites west of Sudbury?

Chutes Provincial Park, near Massey, is about 90 km west of Sudbury, around an hour along the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 17), and it's the only provincial park between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. It has 128 car-camping sites, 79 of them electrical, plus two RV pull-throughs and a trailer dump. It runs from mid-May to mid-October. See Ontario Parks: Chutes.

Can I camp in an RV at French River Provincial Park?

Not inside the park. French River offers backcountry camping only, with around 290 sites reached by canoe, and no road-accessible car camping. The visitor centre is on Highway 69, roughly 65 km south of Sudbury, and works well as a stop on the way to Killarney or the Georgian Bay coast. See Ontario Parks: French River.
