Things to see near your Calgary pickup

Before heading for the mountains, the Calgary Tower — 191 metres, opened in 1968 — gives a panoramic first look at the city with the Rockies on the horizon. Heritage Park Historical Village, Canada’s largest living-history village, sits beside the Glenmore Reservoir in the southwest. Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, and the Calgary Zoo are both worth an afternoon, and the Bow River pathway through Prince’s Island Park is an easy walk from downtown. If your trip lands in July, the Calgary Stampede — rodeo, chuckwagon racing and a midway running since 1923 — is worth timing your pickup around, though book well ahead as it’s the city’s busiest week.

Best road trips from Calgary

RV rental Calgary — FAQs

Where can I pick up an RV near Calgary?

Owners list vehicles across Calgary and into the wider southern Alberta region. A 20–35 mile radius in the search shows the full choice.

How far is Banff from Calgary, and do I need a park pass?

Banff is about 130 km west of Calgary on the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1), roughly 1 hour 30 minutes. You need a Parks Canada pass for Banff National Park, either a daily admission or a Discovery Pass, bought online or at the gate. Campgrounds in the Banff area book well ahead in summer, so reserve before you collect your RV.

When does the Calgary Stampede take place, and does it affect RV bookings?

The Calgary Stampede runs for ten days in early July each year (3 to 12 July in 2026) and draws over a million visitors. Hotels, RV parks and campgrounds around Calgary fill up for it, so book your site and your RV early if your trip overlaps. Outside Stampede week, the city is quieter, and Banff and Kananaskis are within day-trip distance.

Can I visit Drumheller as a day trip from Calgary?

Yes. Drumheller is about 135 km north-east of Calgary, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes by road, and is home to the Royal Tyrrell Museum and Alberta's badlands. A motorhome makes an easy day trip or an overnight stop at one of the town's campgrounds. Check Alberta road conditions on 511 Alberta.
