The North Coast 500

Quite possibly the most well-known and popular of all campervan routes, the North Coast provides you with the ultimate campervan trip with beautiful scenery and the opportunity to sample the charm and friendliness of some picturesque villages on the route. The route is approximately 516 miles in length, with the starting point being the spectacular Inverness Castle. Of course, one of the most significant advantages of completing this trip in a campervan is that you decide how long the road trip will take you, but typically it takes between 3 and 5 days. As you would expect, there are numerous sights to behold, but some of the highlights include Applecross, Durness, John O’Groats, and Dunrobin Castle.

Of course, where you spend most of your time will depend on your interests and, dare we say, fitness levels. If you are a beach person or want to go hiking or enjoy some water sports, then Achmelvich Bay is the perfect choice for you. The beach is spectacular, and the water is crystal clear.

If your preference is to pull on those hiking boots, then there are a plethora of wonderful routes, including the breathtaking highlands, visiting some of the oldest castles in the country, or exploring the famous lochs. If you enjoy getting into the water, then, of course, there are numerous options for canoeing or surfing.

Another significant benefit of this specific route is that there are caravan sites and areas to camp overnight, so you don’t even really need to put much thought into that aspect of the trip. The only negative to this particular route is that once you have experienced it, finding another route that can compete or live up to the memories you will make on this trip will be very challenging.

The Lake District

We couldn’t talk about the best locations to visit when you hire a campervan in the United Kingdom without mentioning the Lake District, an area that is famous for its camping history and scenic beauty. One of the things people at least initially don’t realise when hiring a campervan is the amount of time and freedom this type of holiday delivers. You can literally move at your own pace, there are no deadlines to meet, and if you find somewhere you like, stay that little bit longer. A Campervan holiday also allows you to explore in greater detail, allowing you access to some of the lesser-known locations and hidden gems, of which there are plenty in the Lake District.

Although it is difficult to choose, probably one of our favourite routes is the A591 that runs from Keswick to Kendal. Before anyone comments, this has nothing to do with the delicious Kendal cake, which can be purchased at the end of the trip!!. The real attraction of this route is the breathtaking scenery, which includes crystal-clear lakes and miles and miles of rolling hills. Once again, there are numerous places to camp overnight, with excellent facilities to fulfil all of your needs. After all, it could be argued that the Lake District is the camping Mecca of the United Kingdom. For anyone with younger children, the Lake District is also the birthplace of Beatrix Potter, who, of course, created Peter Rabbit, so that is something else to look out for.

The Giants Causeway – Northern Ireland

Having mentioned a location in Scotland and another route in England, another option is to pop over the Irish Sea and experience the wonders of Northern Ireland. The Giants Causeway is simply spectacular and is visited by thousands of people every year. However, there are also many other attractions in this area, including the thrill, including the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. This rope bridge, which can be a little wobbly when crossing it, is suspended almost 100 ft (30 m) above sea level. It was first erected by salmon fishermen over 250 years ago and is undoubtedly a memorable and fun thing to do with your children.

When visiting the North of Ireland, you will also get to experience the friendliness and welcoming attitude of the locals, in addition to the delicious culinary treats with the occasional Guinness as well, although if Irish Whiskey is more your tipple, then you can also visit the Old Bushmills Distillery along the Giants Causeway Route. Virtually all of the route, which is about 250 miles long, runs along the coast, so you also get to benefit from amazing views and the calm, laid-back atmosphere for which Northern Ireland is famous.
