The Sunshine Coast splits neatly into two trips: the beach strip from Noosa down to Kings Beach, and the Blackall Range hinterland rising up behind it. Both are easy driving from a Sunshine Coast pickup, and it works well as a quieter alternative to the Gold Coast or as a stop on the way north from Brisbane.
This page covers a Sunshine Coast-based trip specifically. For cost, licence rules and vehicle sizes, see the Campervan Hire Australia guide — everything there applies here too. See the Queensland overview for the wider region.

What’s around the Sunshine Coast
Noosa, at the northern end, pairs Noosa Main Beach and Hastings Street with the Noosa River — a good base for calmer water and an easy walk into town. Boreen Point, further north on Lake Cootharaba inside the Noosa Biosphere, is quieter again.
The Blackall Range hinterland, rising behind the coast, has three well-known mountain villages — Maleny, Montville and Mapleton — with lookouts, galleries and noticeably cooler air than the beach on a hot day.
The Glass House Mountains, a cluster of volcanic peaks visible from much of the coast, sit near Australia Zoo — a reasonable family stop between the beach and the hinterland.
Mooloolaba and Kings Beach, further south, are the more built-up beach towns — good swimming and an easy coastal walk, closer to the Sunshine Coast Airport end of the region.
Where to stay overnight on the Sunshine Coast
- Noosa — parks along the Noosa River put you close to Hastings Street; Boreen Point Campground on Lake Cootharaba is a quieter option further out.
- Mooloolaba area — Cotton Tree, right where the Maroochy River meets the coast, is one of the best-known parks on the whole Sunshine Coast.
- Hinterland — smaller campgrounds are scattered through the Blackall Range around Maleny and Montville for a night away from the beach crowds.
Book ahead for the Queensland school holidays — Noosa and Mooloolaba are two of the most heavily booked stretches of coast in the state over summer.
Best time to visit
The Sunshine Coast is subtropical and mild most of the year. April to October brings drier, cooler days — the better window for hinterland walking in the Blackall Range. November to March is hotter and more humid, with a real chance of storms — still a fine beach trip, but check forecasts before a hinterland day.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to hire a campervan on the Sunshine Coast?
The same nightly ranges apply as the rest of Australia — see the Campervan Hire Australia cost breakdown.
Is the Sunshine Coast quieter than the Gold Coast?
Generally yes — the Sunshine Coast has less high-rise development and a stronger hinterland option in the Blackall Range, while the Gold Coast is more built-up around Surfers Paradise. Both work well as a base for the wider East Coast route.
How many days do I need on the Sunshine Coast?
Three to four days covers Noosa, the Blackall Range hinterland and the southern beach towns without rushing.
Do I need a bigger van for a Sunshine Coast trip?
No — a small 2-berth suits this trip well. Distances are short, parking is easier in a compact van, and you’re not covering long outback stretches.
Can I combine the Sunshine Coast with Brisbane or Noosa’s hinterland?
Easily — Brisbane is about 1.5 hours south, and the Blackall Range hinterland is a short drive inland from anywhere on the coast strip.
Is a campervan the same as a motorhome or RV?
Yes — this site uses the terms interchangeably. A campervan is usually the smaller van-based vehicle, a motorhome the larger coach-built type with a separate cab, and RV (recreational vehicle) is the term used in American brochures. Searching for motorhome hire or RV rental on the Sunshine Coast will find the same listings as campervan hire.
