Cairns is the one stop on this site where the campervan itself is almost beside the point — you’re here for the reef and the rainforest, and the van is how you string the two together without flying in and out twice. Most first-time trips run five to seven nights: a couple of days based in Cairns for a reef trip, then north to Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation, or inland to Kuranda and the Atherton Tablelands.
This page covers where to stay, what a Cairns-based loop looks like, and when to come. For the cost of hiring, licence rules and vehicle sizes, see the main Australia guide — everything there applies here too. See the Queensland overview for the wider region.
Cairns Campervan, Motorhome and RV Hire
Owners list a mix of compact 2-berth campervans, mid-size camper vans and larger motorhomes with their own toilet and shower, and you book whichever vehicle suits your trip through our partner Outdoorsy.
What’s around Cairns
The reef. Cairns is the main departure point for Great Barrier Reef day trips — the campervan stays parked at your caravan park while you’re out on the water, so pick a site close to the marina if a reef trip is the priority.
Kuranda. Around 25 minutes inland, reachable by road or by the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and the Kuranda Scenic Railway (worth doing one way and driving back, or vice versa). The village sits in rainforest with a market and wildlife parks.
Barron Gorge National Park, on the way to Kuranda, has Barron Falls with a lookout a short walk from the car park — an easy stop even on a tight schedule.
Cape Tribulation and the Daintree. North of Cairns via Port Douglas, this is where the rainforest meets the reef. The Daintree River crossing is a vehicle ferry, not a bridge, and it runs to a timetable — budget for the wait. The sealed road ends at Cape Tribulation; the Bloomfield Track beyond it toward Cooktown needs a 4WD and isn’t for a standard 2WD campervan.
The Atherton Tablelands, inland and up in altitude, run cooler than the coast — crater lakes, waterfalls and dairy country, and a good add-on if you have more than five days.
Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, just north of Cairns, is the region’s best-known indigenous cultural experience if that’s part of the trip.
Where to stay overnight around Cairns
Holiday parks cluster in two spots: close to the CBD, or along the northern beaches strip.
- Near the city — parks like BIG4 Ingenia Holidays Cairns Coconut (a large tropical-themed park a few minutes from the CBD) and NRMA Cairns Holiday Park (a few kilometres out) both take campervans and have powered sites and dump points.
- Northern beaches — Machans Beach, Holloways Beach, Trinity Beach and Ellis Beach all have parks directly on or near the sand, generally quieter than the CBD parks and a reasonable base if you’re not out on the reef every day.
Book ahead from June to October — this is Cairns’ dry season and its peak tourist months.
Best time to visit
Cairns runs on a wet/dry cycle, not four seasons. May to September is the dry season: lower humidity, reliable sealed roads, and the best window for the trip described above — it’s also the busiest and most expensive period, so book the van a few months out if you’re coming in the July school holidays. November to April is the wet season: high humidity, heavy rain, and some unsealed roads and river crossings can close, including sections relevant to a Cape Tribulation side trip. It’s cheaper and quieter, but check current road conditions before committing to a route north of Cairns if you’re travelling in this window.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to hire a campervan in Cairns?
The same nightly ranges apply as the rest of Australia — see the Campervan Hire Australia cost breakdown. Cairns pickups aren’t priced differently to other gateway cities.
Can I drive a standard campervan to Cape Tribulation?
Yes, as far as Cape Tribulation itself — the road is sealed and the Daintree River crossing is a vehicle ferry. Past Cape Tribulation, the Bloomfield Track toward Cooktown is unsealed and needs a 4WD; a standard 2WD hire isn’t insured on it.
Is Cairns a good one-way pickup or drop-off point?
Yes — it’s one of the major depot cities, so a one-way hire from Sydney or Brisbane ending in Cairns, or starting in Cairns and heading south, is straightforward.
Do I need a 4WD for a Cairns trip?
Not for the route described above. You’d only need one for the Bloomfield Track, Cape York, or similar unsealed routes well beyond a first Cairns trip.
How many days do I need in Cairns?
Five to seven covers a reef day, Kuranda, and a Cape Tribulation loop without rushing. Add two or three more if you want the Atherton Tablelands as well.
Is a campervan the same as a motorhome or RV?
Yes — this site uses the terms interchangeably. A campervan is usually the smaller van-based vehicle, a motorhome the larger coach-built type with a separate cab, and RV (recreational vehicle) is the term used in American brochures. Searching for motorhome hire or RV rental in Cairns will find the same listings as campervan hire.
