VW Campervans
Outside of wedding rings, few inanimate objects inspire such strong sentiments in their owners as Volkswagen Campervans. Talk to an owner for a few minutes and their eyes go misty as they spout beloved anecdotes about everything from its paintwork to its gearstick (this despite the fact that keeping their precious van maintained and serviced may have occupied half their weekends and two thirds of their savings for the last half century).
For vintage van aficionados, VW Campervans are the ne plus ultra, the van by which all others are measured-and with the history they have, it is not hard to see why.
VW Campervans go by many names, to those in the know: the “vee-dub”, the “hippy van”, and even the evocative “breadloaf”, a testament to its unique shape. The variety of names might reflect the broad appeal that VW Campervans have had. It has always been as comfortable as a tool for a family to get away for cheap weekend holidays as it has in being the 1960s counterculture vehicle of choice; VW Campervans do not look out of place with either the most wholesome or the most radical of occupants.
After all, VW Campervans are loved by their many owners for far more than just its design-it is about their other occupants. The beatniks who read beat poetry in its famous split screen van design would perhaps been surprised that, fifty years after them, the celebrity TV chef Jamie Oliver would chose the very same van to trek around Italy searching for recipes. The fact that so many different people love the vans gives its users a sense of community. In the sixty years that it has been in production, VW Campervans have always been a symbol of fun and freedom for those who use it: not only do they give the freedom to go anywhere, but once you are there, you can stay and enjoy it.
That is not to say, of course, that the design bears no relation to VW Campervans popularity-far from it!
Some models are “clunkier” and some models are sleeker, but there is a certain je ne sais quoi that makes VW Campervans instantly recognisable as such. The design of these campervans is a simple application of the principle that form follows function: nothing is extra, nothing is superfluous. Every one of a VW Campervan’s part needs to be there, and therein lies its beauty. Like other classic vehicles (the Mini Cooper, the Routemaster bus), the genius of VW Campervans is not in a powerful engine or fancy special attachments. Rather, it is in sticking to the basics and getting them just right.
If you have never taken a holiday in VW Campervans, consider hiring one on your next vacation. As anyone who has done so will tell you, VW Campervans rental holidays are unlike any other. They may not be the most luxurious, the fastest or the most flash vehicles, but there is just an intangible something about them that you do not get with the dozens of vans on the market which lack the VW Campervan’s unique history.
